Our Intent for Computing

At Hasland Infant and Nursery School, our intent is to equip pupils with the skills and confidence to become competent, creative, and responsible users of technology. Through a well-structured computing curriculum, we aim to develop their ability to explore, analyse, and present information while ensuring their online safety.

Our curriculum emphasizes online safety and is aligned with our online safety policy, empowering pupils to engage with the internet appropriately. Through the teaching of SMART targets, online safety assemblies, and participation in Safer Internet Day, we ensure that children understand how to safely interact in the digital space.

The creative computing curriculum at Hasland Infant and Nursery School fosters curiosity, independence, and resilience, encouraging children to become adaptable learners in an ever-changing digital landscape. By introducing a variety of software and ICT tools, we aim to develop not only technical proficiency but also critical thinking and collaboration skills. We are committed to developing responsible digital citizens who understand their role within their local and global communities. By teaching children to use technology with a focus on safety, responsibility, and ethics, we empower them to apply their computing skills confidently in their future roles.

It is always great to hear the children in our school talk about Computing.

Here are some of the things they had to say...

'I love playing with the beebots, they are so fun!' (Reception)

‘Online safety, helps keep us safe. I love all the different books we read in assemblies' (Year 1)

'I love working on the computers. I love designing programs and creating different animations!’ (Year 2)

How Computing is taught in Hasland Infant and Nursery School:

Autumn term

Each year group focuses on ‘Computer Science’.
Nursery- Exploration of routes through treasure hunts and games.
Reception- Exploration of beebots and the movements.
Year 1- Further learning on beebots, programming and debugging.
Year 2- Scratch Jr to create an online algorithm for their own program.

Spring term

Each year group focuses on ‘Information Technology’.

Summer term

Each year group focuses on ‘Digital Literacy’.

Online Safety is interwoven throughout all computing areas.

360 Degree Safe- Online Safety Mark

In June 2024 Hasland Infant and Nursery School was awarded the 360 degree online safety mark. This means that we have met and exceeded online safety policies and practices.

Links with the Community

During our annual Safer Internet Day, we actively involve parents by sharing key online safety lessons learned in school. Children often create posters or leaflets highlighting how to behave and stay safe online, which they are eager to take home and share with their families. Additionally, the online safety lead provides parents with up-to-date information, including a leaflet on the latest apps children may access and advice on supporting safe internet use at home. This information is regularly updated on our school's website, with weekly updates posted on ParentHub.

Parents are encouraged to reinforce the IT and computing skills learned in school by promoting their use at home, both for leisure and home-learning, and by engaging with the school website. They are also made aware of online safety issues and are encouraged to actively promote safe internet practices at home to support their children's digital wellbeing.

One way we do this is by delivering #WakeUpWednesday guides every Wednesday Via Parenthub.

Here are some examples below:

Online Safety Assemblies

Each and every half term all children in school participate in an Online Safety assembly. Our assemblies often link to themes provided by the ‘Education for a connected world’ framework and are delivered in a child-friendly way by the computing lead. In these assemblies we look at a variety of online safety story books.

After these assembly’s newsletters are sent out in a digital form via Parenthub and children are given a paper copy to bring home.

Below is a copy of the newsletters sent out this year (2024-2025):
