Protected Characteristics

At Hasland Infant and Nursery School, we celebrate and value the uniqueness of every individual within our school community. We believe that diversity enriches our school and helps children develop understanding, empathy and respect for others. In line with the Equality Act 2010, we are committed to promoting equality, celebrating the Protected Characteristics and ensuring that everyone is treated fairly and with respect. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.

We want all children to leave our school with a positive understanding of the diverse world in which they live and the importance of accepting, respecting and celebrating differences. The Protected Characteristics are embedded throughout our curriculum and are promoted through our school values, ethos and SMILE expectations, particularly our belief that 'Everyone Matters'. We encourage children to share their views respectfully, ask questions, and develop an understanding of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

Through these experiences, children learn that every person is unique and valuable, and that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. By fostering an inclusive environment, we help children become confident, compassionate and respectful members of society.

Some of the ways in which we promote the Protected Characteristics across our school include:

Our School Vision

Our SMILE expectations

Our School Behaviour Policy

Positive role modelling by all adults

Active engagement and communication with parents

Assemblies

Whole-school celebrations, including Children in Need and Red Nose Day

Promoting tolerance, individual liberty, friendship and understanding through the active promotion of British Values in assemblies and school life

Promoting inclusion, tolerance, friendship and understanding through all aspects of the curriculum, including RE, PSHE and other subjects
